Our Activities – 2015 

  •  Poor Patient Fund

CFC has started with a poor patient support fund for providing financial support to cancer patients who cannot afford treatment. As a part of this program, funds (amounting to Rs. 2,25,000/-) in three hospitals namely Christian Medical College & Hospital, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital in Ludhiana and Rotary Ambala Cancer & General Hospital, Ambala. Subject to certain conditions and on recommendation of the treating doctor, a cancer patient with insufficient financial resources can avail financial help for treatment from these funds. We thank you for your continuous and unconditional support and dedication to the cause. As a part of this program Master Krishna a case of Ewing’s Sarcoma – a type of bone cancer) and Ms. Prabha (a case of cancer of the ovary) are already receiving treatment in DMC&H. Krishna is nearly through his treatment and is looking forward to join school in the coming days.

  • Support Group Meetings

A support group meeting is held nearly every month with the objective of discussing general issues regarding good health and physical activity. Dr. Deepak Jain educated about bone health and gave useful tips to keep our bones strong and healthy. While Ms. Sumita Chawla talked about doctor-patient relationship from her first-hand experience in the month of March, Dr. Chepsy Philip – hematologist and bone marrow Transplant expert from CMC&H Ludhiana held an interesting session in the month of April on “Importance and Myths about Blood Donation”. Dr. Ramakant Jagpal, a renowned Homeopathy specialist held an informative session on basics of Homeopathy and its role in managing cancer in September.

  • Workshop on Diaphragmatic Exercises and role of Yoga in cancer
  • In the month of May a unique workshop on Diaphragmatic Breathing was held in collaboration with Himalayan Yoga Meditation Society, Ludhiana for volunteers and friends of the cause.  Mr. Sunil Trikha, a trained yoga practitioner helped the participants understand the importance of deep breathing and how it helps eliminate stress and tension. Different props were used to help the participants work on their posture and breath.

 

 Awareness Activities in various educational institutions

Awareness about the disease, its cure and prevention has always been the central point of activities of the NGO. In our efforts to reach out to maximum people interesting and unique competitions were organized in different educational institutions around the city with themes ‘Teens against Tobacco’ and ‘Health – my true friend’ .

  1. 21st January 2015: A collage making competition was held in NIFD where students made beautiful collages on the topic “Teens against Drug Abuse”

 

  1. 4th February 2015: World Cancer Day celebrated at PCTE, Baddowal

In the month of February, topics like tobacco, drugs, cancer detection and treatment were approached in a unique an interesting manner by organizing cartooning competition amongst the students of Punjab College of Technical Education, Baddowal, Ludhiana. More than 170 students participated in the event with full enthusiasm. The session was used as an opportunity to dispel myths concerning prevention, detection, treatment and life after treatment.


  1. 7th March 2015: CFC arranged Cancer Awareness talk for students of Devki Devi Jain College, Kidwai Nagar celebrating Women’s Day.The speaker was Kanupriya Jain and the focus was on preventive strategies, screening and early diagnosis of two of the most common cancers in women – breast and cervical cancer.

  1. 22ndMarch 2015: Informal educative session with Sewa Singh Legha – a renowned Medical Oncologist from Texas, USA.He was updated about our activities and also gave some useful tips to be incorporated in our awareness campaigns.

  1. 26thMarch 2015: Meeting with M R RajaGopal – a palliative care expert from Trivandrum, Kerala mainly about importance of palliative care in terminally ill patients.

  1. 20th June 2015: A cancer awareness talk was arranged at Ashish International by Kunal Jain targeting the laborers working in the factory at Focal Point, Ludhiana.

 

  1. 26th July 2015: Students of Atam Devki Niketan, Kidwai Nagar, Ludhiana were addressed by CFC team about preventive strategies against cancer by Kunal Jain. Nearly 250 students participated in the 45 min interactive session.

 

  1. 7th August 2015: A theme based Nukkad Natak competetion was organized at Atam Devki Niketan School, Kidwai Nagar, Ludhiana. Nearly 45 students forming 4 teams performed in front of 400 students, teachers and CFC team. The manner in which the young children were able to convey message about such a serious topic was appreciated by everyone and made us enthusiastic about holding such sessions in various institutions in future. The competetion was judged by Ranjana Jain along with the CFC team.

  1. 4th September 2015: A guest lecture was arranged for B.Sc Biotechnology students at PCTE for Cancer Awareness. Mr Vishal Sood and Prof S K Munshi did the ground work for arranging the talk which was delivered by Kunal Jain.

  1. 9th September 2015: An interactive cancer awareness session was held for students and faculty of Dept of Economics, SCD Govt College, College Road, Ludhiana. Dr. Dharam Singh, Mr. Jagjit Sood and Dr Kunal Jain emphasized about the healthy life-style and role of diet, yoga & exercise in cancer prevention.

  1. 12th October 2015: Painting competition for 175 students (Class VIII, IX and X) was held at Vardhman International School, Kohara. It was a treat to watch colorful art of the students depicting their thoughts on paper. All the participating students took pledge not to smoke themselves in life and also discourage their near and dears to stop smoking. Mr. Sanjeev Jain, Chairman Vardhman International School was very keen to motivate students of his institution for contributing a small amount regularly towards welfare of the needy patients.

Every student attending the awareness activity is given healthy refreshments. Certificates and prizes are given to the participating and winning students in various activities and competitions respectively. Entire cost of these activities is borne by the Can Fight Cancer Society. We feel that it is a small investment made for a very secure and bright future for the students, their families and our country.

With continued support of our well-wishers coupled with selfless and untiring efforts of our team members, we endeavor to spread the message of Cancer Prevention, Screening, Early Diagnosis and Right treatment to each and every individual initially in Ludhiana before spreading our wings to other parts of Punjab.
